Marine Institute’s Marine Base Construction Underway

Construction work on the next phase of the Marine Institute of Memorial University’s Holyrood Marine Base has begun. The Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre (JRCC) in Halifax is reporting that a 220-foot Newfoundland-based fishing vessel is taking on water in the Davis Strait. The vessel, which has not officially been named yet by the JRCC, is reported to be from St. Anthony and has a crew of 30 onboard. The Fish Food and Allied Workers (FFAW-Unifor) is calling for an immediate halt to all northern shrimp fishing activity in Shrimp Fishing Area 6 (SFA6), which is located adjacent to the northeast coast of Newfoundland and the southeast coast of Labrador.
