William Ward of Port Hope Simpson has been convicted of netting inland water in contravention of the Newfoundland and Labrador Fishery Regulations.
Ward was convicted in Port Hope Simpson Provincial Court on April 23, 2015 and fined $2,000, prohibited for one year from participating in any recreational fishery and forfeited his fishing net. A combination of northerly winds and ice is leading to more delays with the crab fishery on Newfoundland's northeast coast.
DFO wishes to advise harvesters that the crab fishery opening in CFA 3C Cape St. John to North Head (Green Bay) has been further delayed due to ice and will now open at 06:00 hours on Monday May 18, 2015.
Lobster Fishery Season Delayed for a Portion of Area 14B
DFO advises, that at the request of the local industry, the opening of the lobster fishery in the northern portion of Lobster Fishing Area 14B (Point Riche to Ferolle Point) will open 0600hrs May 16, 2015.
Harvesters may set traps on Saturday, May 16 and Sunday, May 17. Fishing gear may not be retrieved until Monday, May 18.

Illegal Fishing of Crab Pots Results in Fines and Forfeiture of Catch
Basil Diamond and Gary Hoffe, both of Change Islands, have been convicted on a total of three counts under Section 22(7) of the Fishery (General) Regulations.
All three charges relate to a crab pot sharing scheme where Hoffe, after reaching his crab quota, left his pots in the water for Diamond to fish.

Harsh Ice Conditions off NL’s Northeast Coast
Ice conditions off Newfoundland are getting worse this week — aided by strong northerly winds.
The strengthening ice is creating problems for fishing vessels in the area, including the recognizable Midnight Shadow of Cold Water Cowboys fame.
These photos, taken from a Coast Guard helicopter May 8, show the Midnight Shadow navigating heavy, ice-infested water. The Midnight Shadow is being assisted by the CCGS George R Pearkes.

Weather and ice conditions continue to play havoc with the fishing season in Atlantic Canada.
DFO announced to harvesters Friday that the opening of the Crab Fishery in Crab Fishing Area 3C Cape St. John to Northhead (Green Bay) has been delayed and will now open at 06:00 hours on Wednesday May 13, 2015.
Similar conditions have already caused delays in the crab and lobster fishery in other Atlantic Canada fishing areas.
