| Shelburne NS Shipyard May Have New Owners Soon |
|
Irving Shipbuilding is apparently interested in the purchase of the Shelburne Ship Repair Yard in Nova Scotia. Irving has been leasing the facility for more than 10 years and plans to employ 60 people when/if a purchase deal goes through. The company also plans to do major repairs to the facility. The shipyard is currently owned by the Nova Scotia government and Irving has an option to buy it for a dollar. Irving laid off 60 workers when it closed the yard last year, but has since rehired 25 people to work on the upgrades and another 20 for a refit in Halifax. Irving has been negotiating with the province for a few months and town officials expects that process to wrap up in another month or so.
