Herring Quota Receives Further Cuts
Further reductions in quota and fishing effort and increased conservation and management measures have been implemented for the Atlantic herring 4VWX purse seine fleet this year.
The total allowable catch (TAC) for the 2018/19 season, which ended on Oct. 14, was reduced from 42,500 to 35,000 tonnes in fishing area 20 (southwest Nova Scotia/Bay of Fundy), with the 2019/20 season, which opened on Oct. 15, operating on an interim TAC of only 50 per cent (17,500 tonnes).

Fishery No Longer Certified by Marine Stewardship Council
With the voluntary suspension by the Seafood Producers Association of Nova Scotia (SPANS) of its Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification for the 4VWX herring purse seine fishery effective May 30, the herring fishery is no longer MSC-certified anywhere on Canada’s east coast.
