DFO advises that 2017 Newfoundland and Labrador recreational groundfish fishery will be open from Saturday, September 23, 2017 to Sunday, October 1, 2017. FFAW Critical of DFO’s Shrimp Plan

FFAW-Unifor announced today that it strongly objects to DFO’s decision to move forward with drafting an unachievable rebuilding plan for northern shrimp at a meeting in Montreal. After siding with the FFAW’s proposal on the summer price of Northern shrimp, the Newfoundland and Labrador Standing Fish Price Setting Panel has accepted the processors’ price for the fall price. The Panel announced it has accepted the Association of Seafood Processor’s (ASP) proposal of $1.30 per pound for this fall. The FFAW had submitted a price of $1.36 per pound. Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard announced today that the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador will receive $4.7 million over five years for a project to help restore eelgrass ecosystems in Placentia Bay, Newfoundland.
