DFO Revokes Surf Clam Decision, Will Be Reissuing New Expression of Interest

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) today announced it has cancelled the Arctic surf clam licence it had awarded to the Five Nations Clam Company in February of this year. DFO said in a press release that the reasons for the licence cancellation have been shared with the proponent and a new Arctic Surf Clam licence will not be issued in 2018. “In order to move forward on implementing enhanced access and promoting reconciliation, we will be launching a new Expression of Interest ...

Reflections on the Evolution of Fishing Technology

Harold DeLouche, trawl design expert with the Centre for Sustainable Aquatic Resources (CSAR), has seen significant changes during his 35 years in the trawling sector. Current focus is now on sustainable fishing, capturing the target species only, having as little impact on the seabed as possible and on vessel fuel efficiency. As well, consumer insistence on sustainable certifications, such as The Marine Stewardship Council, has created an economic model for sustainable harvesting. In the ...

Unauthorized Discharge of Drilling Mud in Scotian Basin Raises Alarm Bells The unauthorized discharge of approximately 136 cubic metres of synthetic-based drilling mud by BP Canada Energy Group ULC (BP Canada) just two months into drilling an exploratory well in the Scotian Basin has raised alarm bells and a call to the federal government to halt the offshore project. The spill was reported on June 22 and was still under investigation as of The Navigator’s press time. Preliminary ...

Survivor Extreme

Northern Labrador was a very busy place in 1995. The huge Voisey’s Bay nickel development was starting to swing into full gear in a remote part of the Labrador coastline just 21 miles south of Nain, the most northerly major town in Labrador. The early signs of winter are obvious in that region by late October with snow on the ground and ice forming along the coastline, while many ponds and lakes are often frozen solid. Marine shipping is crucial for the transport of nearly everything in ...

Drop in Shore Price Impacting Scallop Fishery

While a drop in the shore price is having an impact on southwestern Nova Scotia and Bay of Fundy scallop fishermen this season, it is not as bad as was feared when word came earlier this year that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) was going to open up previously closed scallop areas off the coast of New England. “The biggest issue this year is the perceived increase in (U.S.) landings and the new access that they have,” said Alain d’Entremont, Chief Operating ...

Standing Committee Tables MPA Report

When it comes to the establishment of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) in Canadian waters, the Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans is recommending an enhanced, more transparent process, where access to marine resources for the sustainability of Indigenous and coastal communities be considered “as a central element” in the decision-making processes. The report, Healthy Oceans, Vibrant Coastal Communities: Strengthening the Oceans Act Marine Protected Areas’ Establishment Process, ...

N.L Recreational Groundfish Fishery Reduced by Seven Days

Summer Season: Saturday, June 30, 2018 to Monday, July 2, 2018 Saturday, July 7, 2018 to Monday, July 09, 2018 Saturday, July 14, 2018 to Monday, July 16, 2018 Saturday, July 21, 2018 to Monday, July 23, 2018 Saturday, ...

Predictable Reactions to Lower 2J3KL Cod Catch Limits

After several years of cautious growth, the 2J3KL commercial cod catch limits will be reduced this year. The Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) recently announced that the 2018 stewardship fishery management approach will include measures to ensure catches are distributed throughout the season and do not exceed 9,500 metric tonnes, a 25 per cent reduction relative to 2017. This reduction did not come as a real shock to anyone following DFO’s earlier announcement that 2J3KL cod, ...
