Crab Fishery Opening Delayed in Crab Fishing Area 3C
Weather and ice conditions continue to play havoc with the fishing season in Atlantic Canada.
DFO announced to harvesters Friday that the opening of the Crab Fishery in Crab Fishing Area 3C Cape St. John to Northhead (Green Bay) has been delayed and will now open at 06:00 hours on Wednesday May 13, 2015.
Similar conditions have already caused delays in the crab and lobster fishery in other Atlantic Canada fishing areas.
Lobster Season Opening in Area 14B
DFO advises that the lobster fishery in a portion of Lobster Fishing Area 14B (Point Riche to Ferolle Point) will open Tuesday, May 12, 2015 at 0600hrs.
Traps may be set on May 12 and 13. No gear may be retrieved until Thursday, May 14.
Please be advised that the large lobster prohibition has been removed for areas 13 and 14 and licence conditions are available through the National Online Licencing System.
Mariners Advised of Temporary Delays at Placentia Lift Bridge
The Department of Transportation and Works advises mariners of intermittent delays to navigation through the channel at the Placentia Gut between 8:00 a.m. and noon today (Friday, May 8) and Monday, May 11.
The delays are necessary as part of the continuing construction of the new lift bridge across the Placentia Gut.

An investigation by officers with the Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Division into the illegal netting of salmon in the Carmanville area has resulted in the conviction of two individuals for various offences.

DFO advises that the lobster fishery in Lobster Fishing Area 14A (Cape St. Gregory to Point Riche) will open Saturday May 9, 2015 at 0600hrs.
Traps may be set on Saturday May 9 and Sunday May 10.
No gear may be retrieved until Monday May 11.
DFO also advised lobster harvesters in LFA 3 Cape Bauld to Cape St. John (White Bay)and LFA 4A Cape St. John to North Head (Green Bay) that the fishery will open at 06:00 hours on Saturday May 30, 2015.

Stiff Fines for Salmon Poachers
Francis White of St. Georges has been convicted on two separate counts of violating the Newfoundland and Labrador Fishery Regulations.
Mr. White was convicted on April 15, 2015 in Stephenville Provincial Court for netting inland waters and for failing to comply with a previous court order banning him from being at or near inland waters for 1 year. He received a sentence of 20 days jailtime, a fine of $750 per count and was prohibited for five years from being on at or near inland waters.
