Hunter Tootoo Named Minister of Fisheries and Oceans

Rookie Nunavut MP Hunter Tootoo has been named minister of Fisheries and Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard in Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s new cabinet.

Tootoo served in Nunavut’s legislative assembly from 1999 until 2013. He defeated Conservative MP Leona Aglukkaq in the federal election last month.

Rumours were widespread that Newfoundland and Labrador veteran MP Judy Foote might be in line for the fisheries portfolio, but she was appointed Minister of Public Services and Procurement.

Other Atlantic Canada cabinet posts included:

  • New Brunswick: Dominic LeBlanc – Government House Leader.
  • Prince Edward Island: Lawrence MacAulay – Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food
  • Nova Scotia: Scott Brison- Treasury Board President
