N.L. Snow Crab Stock Down 40 Per Cent
Scientists at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) are painting a bleak picture for the upcoming 2017 snow crab season.
At a media briefing held today in St. John’s, DFO snow crab lead Dr. Darrell Mullowney said the fishable biomass off Newfoundland (NAFO areas 2HJ3KLNOP4R) is now at its lowest observed level — after declining 80 per cent since 2013. Even more troubling is the stock has declined 40 per cent from 2015 to 2016.

Fire Destroys Major Newfoundland Fish Plant
The owners of a Bay de Verde fish plant that was completely destroyed by an April 11 fire have committed to rebuild in the same community.
Quinlan Brothers’ management officials said the large multi-species plant was fully insured and announced plans are underway to replace the facility that, at peak, employs about 700 workers from all over the province, including temporary foreign workers from Thailand.

UPDATE – TSB Deploys Team to Investigate Placentia Bay Fishing-related Fatalities
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) announced yesterday it is deploying a team of investigators to Argentia, Newfoundland and Labrador, to investigate the sinking of a fishing vessel resulting in the loss of life of the three crew members. The TSB will gather information and assess the occurrence.
