Dire Predictions for N.L. Crab and Shrimp Stocks
Scientists at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) are painting bleak pictures for the upcoming 2017 snow crab and Northern shrimp seasons off Newfoundland.
Many in the industry are anticipating cuts to the snow crab quotas and another big hit to the already beleaguered shrimp fishery. And if the DFO quota regulators take the advice of their science colleagues, both valuable fisheries are destined for cuts during the 2017 season.
DFO snow crab lead Dr. Darrell Mullowney said the ...
DFO Reports Northern Cod Stock Up Seven Per Cent
Scientists with the Federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) are taking a cautious approach to the latest stock update of Northern cod of Newfoundland.
DFO stock assessment biologist Karen Dwyer provided a technical briefing March 27 on the cod stock status in NAFO Divisions 2J3KL.
She said, since 2012, the stock continues to increase, but is still in the lower half of the critical zone. From 2015 to 2016, the overall cod biomass increased by seven per cent and in keeping with the ...

3Ps Cod Fishery Achieves Marine Stewardship Council Certification
A southern Newfoundland cod fishery has gained Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification, demonstrating that it is possible for struggling fish stocks to recover and reach sustainability benchmarks that benefit both nature and communities.
The MSC certification of the southern Newfoundland cod fishery – known by its Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) Subdivision of 3Ps – comes after the successful completion of a WWF led Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) in partnership ...
N.L. All-Party Committee on Northern Shrimp Allocations to Reconvene
Newfoundland and Labrador’s All-Party Committee on Northern Shrimp Allocations will reconvene to discuss next steps in response to a new science report from the Federal Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) that indicates a significant reduction in the Northern shrimp stock in SFA 6 over the past year.
Based on these reports, the Federal Government’s “last in, first out” (LIFO) policy relating to Northern Shrimp allocation decisions will continue to have a devastating effect on ...
NLIFHA Expresses Concern with Recent Shrimp Resource Declines
The Newfoundland and Labrador Independent Fish Harvesters Association (NLIFHA) is extremely concerned that its members are again facing major potential cuts to their shrimp quotas based on the latest reports on the status of the resource.
The NLIFHA was formed in 2004 and covers an area of 170 multi-species fish harvesters in the larger vessel fleet sector in the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) division 3K fishing area in North eastern Newfoundland. Many of the associa...
Cod and Some Lessons from History
Several of my recent columns have focused on the increasing cod resource and how we can build a successful fishery based on it in the future.
This month, I will discuss the idea that, if we want to build a better future, we need to understand our past.
If you go the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization’s (NAFO) website, you can find a lot of historical data at http://www.nafo.int/data/frames/data.html. Currently, you can find reported catches for the period from 1960 to 2013, a ...
