Record-Setting Lobster Prices Continuing into Fall on P.E.I.
With record shore prices, strong landings and available plant labour until the end of the season, the lobster fishery has been a good news story on P.E.I. in 2021.
With more than a month to go in the LFA 25 fishery which closes Oct. 10, “landings have been holding strong,” said Molly Aylward, the new executive director of the P.E.I. Fishermen’s Association (PEIFA).
In early September, fishermen were fetching $8 to $8.50/pound for canners and $9 to $9.50 for market size. The price is ...
Are Right Whales Impacting Consumer Lobster Purchases?
As a few innovative Nova Scotia companies forge ahead with efforts to develop new ropeless fishing technologies, the presence of right whales continues to be a concern for area lobster fishermen and the industry in general.
While the majority of Atlantic right whale sightings in Canadian waters and subsequent fishing closures have taken place to the north in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, lobster fishermen are still worried about an upsurge in the lobbying effort to further protect the endangered ...

It is day by day for lobster buyers and dealers in the Maritimes, as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact markets around the world.
“The marketplace continues to be a work-in-progress,” said Leo Muise, executive director of the Nova Scotia Seafood Alliance. “As of the end of January, we can report that 2020 was rather challenging in the seafood sector and the initial weeks of 2021 have been similarly so.”
Muise said the market in ...
2020 Northern Shrimp Prices Take a Major Hit
Despite Newfoundland and Labrador’s Standing Fish Price Setting Panel siding with the price put forth by harvesters this year, the 2020 season will still be a challenging one.
The panel recently accepted the Fish Food and Allied Workers’ (FFAW-Unifor) price recommendation of $1.18/pound for Northern shrimp landed at the plant and $1.15/pound for trucked shrimp.
Last year, fishermen were paid a minimum price of $1.78/pound. At the time, it represented an 18 per cent increase over the ...
FFAW Wants Things its Way on Pricing, Not Transparency
The FFAW has recently been on the bandwagon of transparency in fish price negotiations.
“Fairness and transparency,” it says. If only it were so simple.
The FFAW already has access to production reports from the province, proxies for yield from calculating landed volumes versus production, market reports provided by consultants and international trade media, and export prices from international trade databases.
And it wins most of the price negotiations by a price panel appointed ...

LFA 35 Opening Offers Hope for Good Start in LFAs 33-34
Strong landings, a shore price of $6.50/pound and a “decent quality” catch in the Upper Bay of Fundy had lobster fishermen in Lobster Fishing Areas 33 and 34 optimistic for another good season as they readied for the scheduled ...
Concern Replacing Optimism in LFA 25
Fall P.E.I. Lobster Fishermen Face Disappointing Lull in Price Per Pound
There was a great deal of optimism this year as Prince Edward Island lobster fishermen with fall licences started gearing up for their season — but it didn’t last.
There are about 254 boats from P.E.I. who participate in the Northumberland Strait lobster fishery in Lobster Fishing Area (LFA) 25. The season runs this year from Aug. 8 to about Oct. 8.
By any leap of logic, the captains had good reason to have a ...
Rising Canadian Dollar and Inventory Concerning For N.S. Lobster Fishermen
Above photo: The Lower Woods Harbour wharf is piled high with lobster traps as fishermen prepared for dumping day last fall. A rising Canadian dollar, low shore prices where commercial fishing seasons are currently open, and ample inventory for processors as well as the live market are adding up to an uncertainty for the opening marketing conditions for the LFA 33 and 34 lobster fishery. Uncertainty would probably be the best way to describe any forecast for the ...
Price Setting Panel Sides with Processors on Fall Shrimp Price
After siding with the FFAW’s proposal on the summer price of Northern shrimp, the Newfoundland and Labrador Standing Fish Price Setting Panel has accepted the processors’ price for the fall price.
The Panel announced it has accepted the Association of Seafood Processor’s (ASP) proposal of $1.30 per pound for this fall. The FFAW had submitted a price of $1.36 per pound.
Earlier this year, the Panel chose the FFAW price of $1.25 per pound. The ASP had proposed a summer price of ...
