He joined the army on August 4, 1950 where he trained at Camp Borden and afterwards in Petawawa with the 1st Battalion R.C.R. He left his home in Flatrock at the age of 16 to teach, but soon realized that the classroom was not for him, so he moved on to the iron ore mine in what is now Labrador City.
