Passed On: Alexander Feltham – Glovertown, N.L. fisherman
Feltham, 73, tragically passed away on June 1 as a result of a boating accident on Rocky Pond near Gambo. He was born in Glovertown on April 14, 1948 to the late Millicent and Reuben Feltham. He worked as a teacher, with the Department of Forestry and then went on to become a fisherman. He continued fishing until he retired in 2016.
Passed On: Guy Batstone – Jackson’s Cove, N.L. fisherman
Batstone, 93, passed away on May 30 at the Green Bay Health Care Centre in Springdale. He was born in Jackson’s Cove on February 7, 1928, to Ambrose (Brose) and Maggie Batstone. Between his school days to his retirement days, he wore many hats, including hauling mail by dog team, hauling freight and passengers by snowmobile, road building and snow clearing for the highways. He spent some time away from home in various places such as Grand Falls, Corner Brook and Toronto doing different types of employment. However, the call of the sea was always there, so he went back to the boat and into the fishery. He worked a short time on the fishing trawlers on the Grand Banks, but most of his fishing days were in the inshore fishery. He retired from the inshore fishery in 1992.
Passed On: Ida Randell – Englee, N.L. fish plant worker
Randell, 87, passed away on June 21 at the Roddickton Hospital. She was born on Dec. 23, 1933, to William and Annie Randell in Williamsport, N.L. She worked at the whale plant in Williamsport and later the fish plant after moving to Englee.
Passed On: Jerry Cottreau – Wedgeport, N.S. fisherman
Cottreau, 76, passed away on June 24. Born on March 14, 1945, he was a son of the late Terence and Nettie Cottreau. He was a lobster fisherman for over 50 years.
Passed On: Robert Doucette – Yarmouth, N.S. fisherman
Doucette, 56, passed away on June 24 at the QEII Hospital in Halifax. Born on December 24, 1964 in Wedgeport, he was the son of the late Joseph Doucette and Anna Davis. He worked as a lobster fisherman and was a real handyman, known as a kind soul that would help anybody in need.
Passed On: Donald Melanson – Meteghan, N.S. fisherman
Melanson, 74, passed away on June 17 at home. Born on February 13, 1947 in Meteghan, he was a son of the late Ben and Iva (Comeau) Melanson. He started his work career as a sheet metal worker for Bailey’s in Yarmouth where he worked for many years. However, his love for the ocean caused him to change his career path and become a lobster fisherman. Unfortunately, due to illness, he was forced to later retire. He then went on to take an accounting and bookkeeping course and opened his own business, working from home. He also worked for I. Deveau Fisheries for many years, for Cape Saint Mary’s Boat Builders and more recently for Gary Belliveau Construction until his passing.
