Passed On: John Way — Savage Cove, N.L. fish harvester and boat builder

Way, 95, passed away in St. Anthony, N.L. on October 16, 2023. He was born on May 3, 1928. Way was a fisherman, a boat builder and a man of many talents. He could often be seen on the wharf chatting with the fishermen or out on the point watching the boats through his spyglass.

 

Passed On: George Goodwin — Barrington Passage, N.S. fish harvester

Goodwin, 85, passed away on October 15, 2023. He was born on April 14, 1938. Goodwin was a fisherman most of his life until a government retirement program allowed him to complete his high school education, proudly receiving his grade 12 certificate.

 

Passed On: Brian Gould — Saint John, N.B. boat builder

Gould, 69, passed away in Saint John on October 22, 2023. He was born in Saint John on January 27, 1954. Gould worked as a Journeyman at Saint John Shipbuilding for several years. He loved boats and built a number of model boats over the years, so his career suited him well.

 

Passed On: Alvin Campbell — Wild Bight, N.L. lighthouse keeper

Campbell, 91, passed away in St. Anthony, N.L. on October 4, 2023. He was born in Cape Norman, N.L. on July 1, 1932. Campbell worked for over 35 years as a lighthouse keeper in Cape Norman where he and his wife raised their four boys.

 

Passed On: Shannon Larkin — Wood’s Harbour, N.S. fish harvester and fish plant worker

Larkin, 78, passed away at home on October 11, 2023. He was born in Wood’s Harbour on September 26, 1945. Larkin worked for a time at Sea Life Fisheries before he began his fishing career. He later bought his first boat, the Shere Khan, and spent the rest of his career captaining his own vessels. In retirement, he sold seafood from his own fish truck in Bridgewater, N.S., where he entertained customers with his stories.

 

Passed On: Wayne Timmons — Pleasant Bay, N.S. fish harvester

Timmons, 76, passed away at home on October 4, 2023. He was born in Cheticamp, N.S. Timmons was a fisherman for the majority of his working life.

 

Passed On: Andrew Woodsworth — Bridgewater, N.S. mariner

Woodsworth, 69, passed away in Bridgewater on October 17, 2023. He was born in Picton, Ontario on December 5, 1953. Woodsworth’s passion was the sea. He sailed as a deckhand and later his chief engineer’s papers on many ships, taking him as far as Africa.

 

Passed On: Robert Langille — Milton, N.S. fish harvester

Langille, 46, passed away in Liverpool, N.S. on October 2, 2023. He was born in Halifax, N.S. No stranger to hard work, Langille worked for many years as a fisherman.

 

Passed On: Aloysius Labour — Port Mouton, N.S. fish harvester

Labour, 59, passed away on October 10, 2023. He was born on January 7, 1964. Labour was a man of the sea, whose passion for fishing was unmatched. He spent countless hours navigating the waters with various crew over the years — most recently, his son Nicholas and son-in-law, Cory — fishing lobster, herring and halibut. His expertise and knowledge of the industry were unparalleled, earning him the respect and admiration of fellow fishermen.
